SMCSBA Focuses on Special Education
September 23, 2026

At its first meeting of the 2026-27 school year on September 21, SMCSBA trustees and superintendents learned about, reviewed, and shared on special education policies and roles. The goal for the meeting was for board members to feel equipped to: bring at least one question back to their districts, commit to taking at least one student-centered action related to serving students with disabilities this school year, and appoint members from their districts to the San Mateo County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Community Advisory Committee (CAC).
Appointing members to the SELPA’s CAC is a mandated responsibility of member district boards (all SMC school districts are members). The CAC Recruitment Packet provides members with a good playbook for engaging in the appointment process.
SMCSBA extends a sincere thank you to the experts that joined in our dinner conversation – Alida (Lee) Fisher, SFUSD Trustee; Dr. Christian Rubalcaba, Superintendent, Redwood City School District; Diego Ochoa, Superintendent, San Mateo-Foster City School District; Tina Perdices, SFUSD CAC Co-Vice Chair and School Counselor for SMCOE Court & Community Schools; and Tarra Fuchs-Knotts, San Mateo County CAC Member.
