September 24 Meeting Minutes

October 9, 2012

September 24, 2012

Minutes for the San Mateo County School Boards Association

Executive Meeting

Attendees:  Alisa MacAvoy, Margi Powers, Karen Schwarz, Alan Sarver, Shelly Masur and Carrie Du Bois

Vice President MacAvoy called the meeting to order at 5:18 p.m.

There was not a quorum, so the minutes were not approved.

Update from Vice President MacAvoy:  Eileen is still working on the 501 (c) 3, so there are no updates at this time.  A few more checks have come in from the Kent Awards banquet.

Margi gave an update on planning the January meeting.  After some research on “out of the box” ideas, she decided the most critical topic would be school finance reform.  Possible topics could be an update on the Getting Down to Facts Report, Dennis Meyers of CSBA, a conversation with Joe Simitian or a report from California Forward.  Also discussed was a possible joint meeting with Silicon Valley Leadership Group.  Margi and Alisa will continue to research these ideas.

Kent Awards update:  Hillary will chair this again with Alisa’s help,  and it will be held at the Crowne Plaza.  Alan will secure a musical group, and Carrie will work on the Emily Garfield Award.

Sponsorship update:  Chevron has sponsored the Kent Awards the past two years.  Do we want to be a bit more aggressive in our sponsorships and go after additional partners?  Alan suggested we talk to PG&E and other green tech companies.  The group discussed pursuing additional sponsorships.  Individual sponsorship levels are posted on the SMCSBA web site but we can be flexible and add additional levels.

Carrie gave an update on the joint meeting with the San Mateo County of Realtors (SAMCAR).  Seth and Carrie will meet with the executive director to discuss this idea in October.  The purpose of the meeting would be to educate realtors about how to talk about the public schools and give more information about the API scores.  The school ranking system is causing confusion with realtors and the general public.  The group thought this meeting is a good idea.
